antique writing desks

The writing desk certainly evolved out of necessity. Man has always tried to find new and better ways to communicate with his peers. Communication is the key to working as a team, living cooperatively, and surviving the harsh realities of our world; but it is also helpful in pushing technology forward. The written word has changed human kind in more ways than one could possibly imagine. It gave us the alphabet, literature, postage stamps, dramatic and comedic plays, and all other media. Without the written word the human race would still be dwelling in caves and running down grazing animals on the plains. Without an even rudimentary notion of the writing desk, the written word would never exist.

A writing desk is traditionally used for writing letters by hand. These normally include desktop cubbyholes or drawers to store the writing supplies when not in use. Some of the most popular writing desk styles are modern desks, traditional desks, contemporary desks, and antique desks.

Traditional antique writing desks were used generally for writing letters and they featured those wonderful roll down tops to cover the work. These tables come with plenty of space that helps in maintaining privacy and also protects the work. These tables also generally include compartments and drawers. Our modern desks are designed mainly for desktop computers. Often these days the writing surface slides down and features a set of smaller pigeonhole drawers.

Contemporary writing desks come in vibrant and bold designs. The writing surface is not only spacious, but often scratch resistant. The drawer has plenty of room to store staples, pens, paper and clips and the spacious writing area has enough room for placing a laptop as well as decorative items to add warmth to your work environment. These desks come in different styles, sizes, and finishes. These desks also often include shelves for placing keyboard and mouse. Most modern desk’s usually come with legs that have tack glides that help in easy relocation of the piece.

An antique writing desk captures the charm and beauty of a bygone era. At the same time it accents the down to earth, functional aspect of a writing desk. The period of these types of desks can be identified by the craftsmanship as well as design. Some of the famous antique desk styles are William and Mary, Jacobean desks, Georgian, Queen Anne, Victorian, and Chippendale.

Its trumpet turned legs differentiates William and Mary desks from others and this table comes with a beautifully constructed Spanish foot. These tables are normally made with ebony wood, black walnut, and holly. The Jacobean desks have rigid design with sturdy construction and straight lines. These tables are made with geometric design styling and they are traditionally made from oak or black walnut.

Queen Anne styles are the refined design of William and Mary. Georgian styles are the embellished version of the Queen Anne writing desk and have major design features such as carved legs and pierced back slats. A writing desk is truly a great addition to office or home and it complements a room as much as other furniture.
