Antique & Vintage

Form and function are the two most important factors when choosing a wooden writing desk. Designed to increase productivity and keep organized, this piece of furniture deserves careful attention, especially if you work from home. With the advancement in technology and the ability to stay connected with others through computer systems and fax machines, it’s never been more possible to work from home, which is why so many people start their office with a small table or counter to perform work on.

Yet it’s not always those working from home that can benefit from these small writing areas. Sometimes a table is more simplistic in nature and intended to be decorative. Think of all the elegant looking dining rooms or dens that have sophisticated pieces of furniture staggered throughout, with a small table in the corner. This type of wooden writing desk is often petite in size and features decorative accents, such as vases or photo frames. While they can be used for writing out bills or keeping a journal, the functions of these tables are purely decorative and not designed to be used for heavy workloads.

If your intentions are to use the writing table for work, it’s important to choose one that has a larger layout and plenty of room for laying out papers, arranging a laptop and printer, and personal space for typing or answering phones. This doesn’t mean that the piece of furniture has to be oversized, however. While you want ample space to be productive, consider using storage trays and filing cabinets to keep documents in an organized fashion.

Even though form and function are essential when choosing a decorative table, you will appreciate the finer details and craftsmanship that are found in decorative pieces. For example, a French writing desk is simply exquisite and a wonderful addition to any elegant room. With an appreciation for history, these tables were often designed for notable kings of the era, such as King Louis XIV. These tables can also be used in modern design, drawing inspiration from past eras and present day craftsmanship.

Another beautiful table is the Queen Anne writing desk, which features the beautiful and elegant Queen Anne style. This type of table has intricate details, including a scalloped skirt, cabriole legs, and a shiny work surface. Petite in size, yet with an overpowering beauty, the Queen Anne style is perfect for a traditional home and comes in dark, cherry wood colors with small drawers and detailed hardware.
